Bug Tracking Tools

Yes we may be heading for a global economic meltdown, and yes this has a large impact on business. But there are some areas that simply shouldn't be left on the back burner and bug tracking is one of them. Here we review 2 bug tracking tools that are totally free and shoulf help keep your debugging on track.

JITTERBUG

Jitterbug was written in C. it has a built in email client and runs as a CGI. It also allows the sharing of files between Unix and Windows based platforms. There is no database required with Jitterbug and each user has their own web environment which they can configure to suit. Jitterbug is great for small groups but perhaps not best suited for the larger outlay. It's functions are perhaps not as extensive as some other tools (such as bugzilla) but is runs efficiently, it's well organised and quite adequate for noral use. All Bugs found are notified through email or web based form.

RT - Request Tracker

RT is another completely free and email based bug tracking system. This system is community based and works on a ticket based environment. It has been running since 1996 and was written in PERL. You can download the software free as well as the documentation but then you have the option to pay for support. RT is best suited for custom extensions and offers scripts that can be customised to allow workflow notification and resolution behaviours to be modified. We have found this option useful ourselves.
